Fundamental to any successful design is an understanding of the site’s Context: what makes it where it is, what makes it 'here' and no-where else, spatially, geographically, historically, culturally. This understanding is my starting point, giving me the structure around which to design the new spaces.

From here, I define a clear Vision - a considered design response to the site and the brief that will underpin the design right through to completion. Experience has shown me that the clearer the design vision, the more successful the project, be that in achieving planning permission, securing funding, to simply being robust enough to withstand value engineering or changes during the construction process.

The Design process then follows; I work quickly with sketches and physical models to explore and test ideas, then shift to digital drawings to develop the design in more detail right through to the production of the construction information. Integrating the vision with the environmental challenges and technical complexities, I'm seeking to simplify and reduce the design down to its essentials. It’s about refinement and a lightness of touch.

The aesthetic evolves and emerges in response to its context, each building absolutely specific to its place.
